1. I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House

IMDB | Rotten Tomatoes | How To Watch |
4.5 | 52 | Netflix – Worldwide |
This isn’t the best movie I will admit, but it is what many may be looking for when looking for a classic haunted house tale and successful at what it is intended to do. The plot follows a young woman taking care of an elderly women suffering from dementia, however, the mansion is haunted. Expect eerie spectral and blurry figures and a silent creepy atmosphere. The House seems to be some form conduit between this world and the next allowing the dead spirits to communicate. In my opinion the low ratings are due to the fact it is a slow quiet movie focusing mostly on atmospheric and suspense scaring rather than big jumpy and horrific demon faces. I think if you are looking for a classic spooky tale, then this is ideal.
2. Under the Shadow

IMDB | Rotten Tomatoes | How To Watch |
6.9 | 53 | Netflix – Worldwide |
This movie is worth watching as it is just a good movie even if you are not looking for horror. The plot is unique as a woman and her daughter cope with the terrors of war-torn Tehran of the 1980s. As the war is raging outside something evil is terrorising them inside their apartment (not a haunted house but close enough). This is one of the highest rated horror movies in recent years and it does not rely on cheap scares or constant jumpy scenes, instead it builds slowly and only a few times will really make you jump, but in the best possible way. The movie is very deep in meaning with much of the horror as a metaphor for the terror felt by families during times of war, when a bomb could fall onto your home at any point. This movie will leave its mark on you as a really good scary story.
3. The Haunting of Hill House

IMDB | Rotten Tomatoes | How To Watch |
8.7 | 93 | Netflix – Worldwide |
OK, so I have cheated here as this is not a movie but a Netflix series, however it does the haunted house genre so well and is a great watch for anyone looking for a good haunted house story on Netflix. The series follows a family who are still haunted by their experience in a haunted house where their mother took her own life in mysterious circumstances. The series is set in dual time going back and forth from past to present. It is hard to say much without giving too much away, but the house is haunted by a number of ghosts all with different agendas. It ticks most boxes of being creepy, watchable, scary and some nicely built up jump scenes but not too many.
4. Our House

IMDB | Rotten Tomatoes | How To Watch |
5.3 | 55 | Netflix – Worldwide |
Our house is the story of a young genius invents a device that amplifies paranormal activity, but it works far too well and brings back things much worse than intended. It is an independent movie which has nicely developed characters. It is more of a spooky ghost film than a movie with loads of jump scares Not the greatest or most exciting movie but a nice watch.
5. Poltergeist (1982)

IMDB | Rotten Tomatoes | How To Watch |
7.3 | 83 | Netflix – US version |
The original Poltergeist movie from Steven Spielberg is still a much watch today and much better than the 2015 remake. With a classic like this the plot does not have to be complicated, a family’s home is haunted by a host of demonic ghosts. What I love about this film is that it’s the perfect balance of creepy and spooky without the uncomfortable jump scares. Although it is a little dated and it now takes a lot more to scare an audience it is hard to re-create the magic that movie makers could in the 1980s. The movie is highly regarded as one of the greatest horror movies of all time and certainly one of the best haunyed house stories.
This movie is currently available on the US version of Netflix which you can access on your own Netflix with the addition of a VPN service, we recommend NORD VPN.
6. The Conjuring

IMDB | Rotten Tomatoes | How To Watch |
7.5 | 87 | Netflix – Japanese version |
I remember when this movie first came out, there was a lot of hype as it being the scariest movie ever made. It is also based around and supposedly true story of the family that moved into a house which had been the sight of a brutal murders many years before. The House is haunted by a number of spirits and paranormal investigators are called in to help investigate. The movie lives up to its hype as its not just terrifying but is also very good all round and has since had many prequels and sequels being connected to the Annabelle movies (Annabelle is in this movie).

7. The Lodgers

IMDB | Rotten Tomatoes | How To Watch |
5.1 | 59 | Netflix – US version |
The Lodgers is an Irish ghost story about twins who live in a family manor thiw a strange connection to the place. At night, the manor becomes a domain of a sinister presence. This is a movie more on the eerie ghost story genre without the jump scares, just the spooky atmosphere and interesting story concept. It has a lot of bad ratings, but I feel like this is likely because viewers were looking for a jumpier movie with demonic faces and blood spitting monsters.
This movie is currently available on the US version of Netflix which you can access on your own Netflix with the addition of a VPN service, we recommend NORD VPN.
8. A Haunted House

IMDB | Rotten Tomatoes | How To Watch |
5 | 57 | Netflix – US version |
A Haunted House is just a spoof comedy taking a lot inspiration from movies such as paranormal activity. The plot doesn’t need much explaining, a couple move into their dream house only to discover it is haunted by demonic forces. The movie is identical to Scary Movie and is just 86 minutes of ridiculous slap stick comedy taking the piss out of a host of horror movies throughout.
9. Insidious

IMDB | Rotten Tomatoes | How To Watch |
6.8 | 79 | Netflix – US version |
Technically it is not about a haunted house, even the trailer indicates it is not the house that it is haunted but the child, however it is very much the same as any classic haunted house movie as all the action does take place in a house. If you are looking for something a bit different then this movie may just be worth a watch. For most of the film it seems like any typical horror / demonic haunting movies, which it is. However, the movie takes a fairly odd turn in how it chooses to try and conclude the film, I cannot say any-more without giving it away so just give it a watch. Perhaps it goes a little to far in craziness for some or maybe the witters were so fed-up of trying to write a good ending to a horror (which is rare) they decided to give something else a go.
10. Sinister

IMDB | Rotten Tomatoes | How To Watch |
6.8 | 78 | Netflix – US version |
Sinister is a truly terrifying movie about a demon entity that uses images as its gateway, once you see him in an image there is no getting rid of him. A writer and a family move into a house where a whole family died in a horrific crime just 9 months before. The father discovers some film in the attic with the terrifying truth and unleashes the demonic entity upon the family. The movie overall has very high ratings and is definitely a jump scare movie, so watch with the lights on and the cushions at the ready. A well done horror movie with everything to make a modern thrill seeking audience jump.
11. Ju-on: The Grudge (2002)

IMDB | Rotten Tomatoes | How To Watch |
6.7 | 72 | Netflix – Japanese version |
Ju-on is the original Grudge movie and a thousand times better than the American re-make, so don’t bother with the American re-make and just get over the fact it is subtitled!. This for me was one of the creepiest movies I have watched, at least top 10 in terms of lasting physiological effect. Never again can I look under my own bedsheets again, it is as creepy as hell. The plot follows a social worker who is chased by 2 vengeful spirits brutally murdered in the house. This movie has gone on to be a franchise with a number of sequels, remakes and now a Netflix series.
This movie is currently available on the Japanese version of Netflix which you can access on your own Netflix with the addition of a VPN service, we recommend NORD VPN.
