6.8/1090/100Exclusively on Netflix

Always Be My Maybe plays with an idea we’ve seen before in countless rom coms: Suddenly, you realize your best friend of the opposite gender is your perfect match. However, in this 2019 film, the story is presented in a more realistic and less idealistic light.

Starring Ali Wong as Sasha and Randall Park as Marcus, this rom com gives you comedic moments while these two characters reconnect after decades apart. Sasha is a highly successful chef who comes back to her hometown of San Francisco to open a new restaurant. By coincidence, she runs into Marcus, her childhood best friend.

Flashbacks show us the years of their childhood constantly spent together– until one day, as teenagers, the friendship turned into romance and then became too awkward for the pair. After years of not seeing each other, they are suddenly face to face and back into each other’s lives.

The film will give you laughs as the two try to navigate their very different lives and possibly quite different feelings. Wong and Park give amazing performances that will have you bursting out in laughter along the way. Plus, the film features a small part for Keneau Reeves, so what’s not to love?

This 2021 Netflix original movie comes from the Netherlands and gives viewers what they are looking for in a classic rom com. This story revolves around Lotte (played by Yolanthe Cabau), a woman in her thirties working as a TV producer. Her boyfriend did propose to her but then suddenly dumped her in the midst of the wedding preparations. Around the same time, her sister gets engaged, and tensions rise as her wedding preparations begin.

Our distraught central character begins a personal transformation as new opportunities arise at work. As she comes into her own as an on-camera personality, she finds herself faced with a new romantic interest as well as her ex showing up in her life.

While the general idea of the plot is something we have seen before in romantic comedies, Just Say Yes is a fun, comedic, and heartfelt watch. Particularly if you are interested in international movies, this could be a great pic for your rom com watch.

This 2010 film has everything we’re looking for in a romantic comedy: laughs, touching moments, and a happily ever after ending. You can’t go wrong streaming Life As We Know It the next time you need a rom com.

An unlikely pairing, Holly (played by Katherine Heigl) and Eric (played by Josh Duhamel) are set up on a blind date by their mutual friends. The date was a disaster, with no future in sight for these two characters.

However, through a tragic accident, their mutual friends suddenly died, leaving their one-year-old baby specifically in the care of both Holly and Eric. Shocked by the sudden new parenting responsibility, let alone having to share the responsibility with an enemy, the comedic and heartfelt journey begins.

This film follows the funny and touching adventures of these two characters learning and growing together as they change diapers and attempt to parent baby Sophie. While it might not be the most realistic scenario, it is a fun and light rom com that tugs at the heartstrings.

4. Good On Paper

IMDb RatingRotten Tomatoes RatingWhere Else to Watch
5.6/1051/100Exclusively on Netflix

If you’re looking for an unconventional, female-powered twist on romantic comedies, you will absolutely want to watch Good On Paper. Comedian Iliza Shlesinger both stars in the film and wrote the script based on a real-life romance-gone-wrong.

In the film, Shlesinger’s character, Andrea, is at a point in her life where she’s had enough. She has always prioritized everything in her life to support her career as an actress and a comedian. But in a moment where the career isn’t going as planned, she feels worn out from the rejection.

At her most vulnerable, she meets a seemingly sweet guy named Dennis (played by Ryan Hansen) on a plane, and they become good friends. However, as things become romantic, she has a feeling something isn’t quite right. The same sentiment is echoed by her closest friend (played by Margaret Cho).

As the film continues, it becomes clear that Dennis isn’t at all what he has presented himself to be. Woven in with Shlesinger’s stand-up and comedic friends and frenemies, this film is a fun watch as it deals with themes of lies, female intuition, and learning to honor it more effectively.

If you’re looking for a truly funny and authentic twist on the classic rom com, Good On Paper is a must-watch. With excellent acting, consistently funny moments, and a truly original script, you can’t go wrong streaming this movie.

5. The Lovebirds

6.1/1065/100Amazon (rent or buy)

This romantic comedy gives you everything you’re looking for and more. With Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani as a powerful pair of leading actors and Michael Showalter directing, who could ask for more?

The plot also gives you the laughs and the heartfelt moments you want with a rom com with the added bonus of a murder mystery. Its story begins with the two main characters, named Jibran and Leilani, four years into what was once a very loving relationship. At this point, however, all they can do is bicker with each other.

While the comments and arguments are hilarious for the audience, it’s clear the lovebirds are in real trouble. And then the trouble becomes even more palpable as they are driving along and, out of nowhere, they end up witnessing a murder.

What ensues is now a couple, who was just on the verge of breaking up, comedically trying to solve the crime they just witnessed. The misadventures that follow allow them to get to know each other all over again and give us the heartfelt moments we crave from a rom com.

If you’re looking for an over-the-top romantic comedy that really goes heavy on the comedy, The Lovebirds is the perfect choice. Stellar performances from Rae and Nanjiani are a delight, and their dialogue will have you laughing out loud.

6.4/10UnratedExclusively on Netflix

This 2019 Turkish film gives the viewer a story of teen love set among the picturesque beaches of Turkey. The scene is set in 1997 in Bodrum, a gorgeous vacation getaway along the country’s Aegean Coast.

Our main character is a teenage boy named Deniz, played by Fatih Sahin. When he arrives in Bodrum, he runs into his older sister’s friend, Asli (played by Ece Cesmioglu), and falls deeply into teenage love.

For as much time as they spend together, it’s not clear if Asli feels the same. As she shows interest in other boys, drama, jealousy, and teenage passion erupt amongst the characters.

Although it has its comedic moments, it is a more picturesque and quiet film than a traditional rom com. However, if you are looking to get caught up in the twists and turns of European summer love, this film is a great choice.
