The 5 Best Christmas Movies on Starz

  5. The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About Christmas

1. Disney’s a Christmas Carol

Disney has quite a reputation for producing some of the best movies, and this 2009 film is no different. In this film, the three ghosts of Christmas visit the foul-tempered miser, Ebenezer Scrooge, and try to show him all his errors, in an attempt to change his mind about Christmas.

The movie is a 3D reenactment of Charles Dickens’ classic. Jim Carrey plays Ebenezer Scrooge, a role that he brings to life with his exemplary performance. Ebenezer’s nephew, London, cannot wait for Christmas, but his Uncle’s bitterness may ruin it all. Ebenezer also scolds his faithful clerk for a little too much Christmas cheer.

Scrooge’s business partner appears to him as a ghost and tells him the three Christmas ghosts would be visiting later that night. The Ghost of Christmas Past to show him the past, the Ghost of Christmas present to take him through the current happenings, and the Ghost of Christmas future to reveal what is to come. Scrooge’s transformation is remarkable, as he sets aside his bitterness and embraces Christmas as he should.

The 3D technology brings the film to life as it makes some of the scenes all the scarier. But don’t worry, if you’d like to watch this with your kids, you can do so, only that younger kids shouldn’t watch by themselves because of the few dark scenes. Although there are several movies with the three Christmas ghosts theme, Disney’s A Christmas Carol is undoubtedly one of the best.

2. Inspector Gadget Saves Christmas

Christmas movies go way back, and if you are looking for an entertaining classic to watch with the kids, you should try this 1992 animated film. The Christmas special features characters from the popular cartoon TV series, Inspector Gadget.

The film’s villain, Doctor Claw, is out to ruin Christmas for everyone. He gets to Santa’s workshop in the North Pole, where he and the elves are working to make toys for everyone in the world. Claw disguises himself as Santa and uses mind control devices to order the elves to capture Santa. He plans to use them to make defective toys so that everyone blames Santa for a ruined Christmas.

Inspector Gadget, Penny, and Brain head off to the North Pole to stop Doctor Claw. Unknown to them, he’s already a step ahead, and Gadget isn’t suspicious of anything when they get to the workshop and find him disguised as Santa. Brain and Penny aren’t too trusting, and within a few minutes of their arrival, the fight between them ensues, as they try to capture Claw and save Christmas.

If you have watched the Inspector Gadget series, you’re going to love this Christmas special. As usual, the characters come together to help Inspector Gadget finish his job. This Christmas special is a classic, and I’d recommend watching it at least once.

3. Arthur Christmas

So, what happens when Santa and his vast army of elves leave little Gwen out of the list of children receiving gifts this year? There’s only one way to remedy Christmas, and Santa’s son, Arthur, must come to the rescue.

This animated movie is full of comedy as it follows clumsy Arthur and his rebellious grandfather as they try to deliver the gift to Gwen. Somehow, during the night, the two are mistaken for aliens, and an international military crisis occurs. So, will the two save Christmas for little Gwen, or will they be too late?

Arthur Christmas also brings Mrs. Claus to light, who is no longer the only woman in town. Santa’s Giftwrap Battalion gains an excellent addition, Brony, who steals the show.

The film is the ideal blend of some good Christmas humor and action. Director and co-writer Sarah Smith adds a female touch to Santa’s boy’s club in her first animated feature. Be sure to watch this 2011 animated film with the kids and get to enjoy some fun Christmas cheer.

4. Scoot and Kassie’s Christmas Adventure

As far as Christmas movies go, you can always expect them to center around the theme of family and friendship. Scoot and Kassie’s Christmas adventure is no different, but the first few minutes of the movie will leave you worried.

The film starts with Jake, a K-9 dog, and his human partner chasing two robbers. Just as the dog is about to catch them, he gets caught in some barbed wire. One of the robbers, Marv, uses a log attached to the wire to taunt Jake, before finally tossing him into the river, which will leave you wondering whether he makes it out alive.

Enter Kassie, her father Paul, and sister Esther. While taking lunch to her father at the bank, Kassie comes across Jake, who’s wounded and struggling to survive. Both she and Esther take the dog home where she takes care of him, cleans him up, and nurses him back to health. She decides to name him Scoot.

The film follows Kassie and Scoot as they organize a concert to help raise funds for impoverished children. The two thieves at the beginning of the film plan to crash the event and steal the cash. But, Kassie and her four-legged friend are not about to let that happen.

There’s not much to this 2013 film in terms of plot. It may come across as a plain one to critics. However, we’ve already established that Christmas movies can be quite cheesy. If you love a good canine-movie, then you’re going to love this pick.

Better yet, it makes an excellent choice for kids, as it primarily focuses on the 10-year old girl who’s trying to make Christmas better for others and ends up in a whirlwind adventure with her rescue-dog.

Dr. Seuss’s characters are loved by many, and this 2002 film is no exception. The animated Christmas film is spun off the animated TV series, The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That!

It’s now up to the pack of friends to make sure the baby reindeer gets back home safely. They must also ensure he gets home in time for Christmas.

The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About Christmas is a holiday special packed with lessons that parents will love. We’re introduced to some interesting characters while Ralph, the reindeer, makes his way home. This included a herd of elephants who can smell water, dolphins that can communicate far and wide, and Christmas Island crabs.
