  3. Rocketman
  4. West Side Story
  5. Guava Island
  6. Funny Face

  8. Hello Again

1. Grease

Grease follows Olivia Newton-John’s Sandy Olsson as she grows through love and friendship after she has a summer fling with John Travolta’s Danny Zuko. The summer fling is sung about extensively in the accurately named song Summer Nights. Some of the most well-known songs from the soundtrack include songs like You’re the One that I Want, Greased Lightnin’, and the previously mentioned Summer Nights.

If you haven’t watched Grease yet, it should definitely be the next movie on your to-watch list. It is a classic that is quite popular for its music and infectious charm. Through the performances and catchy music, it manages to make anyone’s day after watching it.

The cultural impact this song has had throughout the years is unprecedented. Not only was there Grease: Live which premiered on Fox in 2016, but there was also an entire episode dedicated to the musical on Fox’s Glee. It also had a disappointing sequel which is next on this list, but let’s be honest, it’s hard to come close to what was created with Grease.

With Grease, there are several options with streaming services which makes it very accessible for casual watchers that don’t have many streaming services. It is of course on Amazon Prime, but you can also watch it on Netflix and HBO Max.

2. Grease 2

IMDBRotten TomatoesWhere to Watch
4.437Amazon Prime

Grease 2, the unfortunate bomb of a sequel, is very similar to the story of the first movie except the roles are switched. Stephanie Zinone (played by Michelle Pfeiffer) is the leader of a gang called the Rydell High School’s Pink Ladies while the male love interest, played by Maxwell Caulfield, is the shy, nerdy exchange student that catches Stephanie’s eye after breaking things off with Adrian Zmed’s Johnny Nogerelli.

As seen from the IMDB rating and Rotten Tomatoes rating, this film was not a critical darling that could be used to describe its predecessor. With less-than-worthy musical numbers and an over-the-top plot, this movie was a disappointment at every angle.

However, it’s a recommendation nonetheless due to its association with Grease. It’s most certainly not a modern classic, but if you want to know what their vision was for this universe after the first film, it makes for a fun evening. But, please prepare yourself for something much less than what the first film was.

If you are itching for some new Grease content and you aren’t wanting to watch this film, you are in for some good news. HBO Max, one of the newer streaming services, handed out a straight-to-series order for Grease Rydell High, a show highlighting the story from the first movie. The news on the show is slim, but rumor is that it will feature some of the iconic characters and songs from the first film.

That’s not all though. Even more recently, Paramount announced that they will be producing a prequel called Summer Lovin’ which will specifically tell the story that was only sung about in Summer Nights. Expect returning characters like Sandy and Danny along with a few of the supporting characters.

Unlike Grease, the sequel isn’t as accessible. However, it is still available on Amazon Prime and CBS All Access. If you do not have either service, you can watch it by renting or buying it for decent prices anywhere that you rent or buy your movies digitally.

3. Rocketman

IMDBRotten TomatoesWhere to Watch

This biopic follows Elton John (played by Taron Egerton) as he transforms into the Elton John we all know and love. Set to his well-known music, this musical perfectly shows Elton’s life on the big screen with outstanding performances from Taron Egerton, Richard Madden, and Bryce Dallas Howard.

The makers intertwined the story and music rather than just making it a movie about making music. This makes this epic musical stand out among the rest.

A lot like other movies, Rocketman is on Amazon Prime and Hulu. You can also watch it anywhere that you watch EPIX.

4. West Side Story

IMDBRotten TomatoesWhere to Watch
7.592Amazon Prime
Netflix

If you have read about West Side Story and thought that it was extremely similar to Romeo and Juliet, you would be absolutely right! West Side Story is a modern retelling of the story featuring two rival gangs in New York in which one gang member falls in love with his rival’s sister.

This film, along with a few others on this list, definitely earns the title of being a “classic”. It’s known all around the world, and even if you haven’t watched the film, you’ve probably been exposed to it in some form through references or a Disney Channel film series, Teen Beach Movie, where a retelling called Wet side Story is featured.

Similar to Grease, Hollywood is itching for another success story for this classic. A Spielberg-directed retelling starring Ansel Elgort and Rachel Zegler in the lead roles. Though it has been pushed back quite a bit, it is expected to come out on December 18th, 2020.

Again, West Side Story is very accessible for many as it is on three streaming services. The three that it is on is Amazon Prime, Hulu, and Netflix. Since those are three of the most used subscription services besides Disney+, you should have an opportunity to watch it.

5. Guava Island

IMDBRotten TomatoesWhere to Watch
6.876Amazon Prime

Guava Island stars Donald Glover as Deni Maroon who is a young musician that lives on an impoverished tropical island called Guava Island with his girlfriend, Kofi Novia, who is played by Rihanna. The island is controlled by a paramilitary group called Red Cargo. In an attempt to make the residents happy for just one day, he tries putting together a secret concert that gains the attention of Red Cargo leading to some trouble.

Though it hasn’t gained as much attention as other films on this list, Guava Island seems to have a decently-sized group of fans which mostly consist of pre-existing fans of Donald Glover and Rihanna.

This film, with its good and bad reviews, is mostly considered a decent movie with an even better cast. With its short runtime, it is most certainly an easy watch even if it is sometimes obtuse in its need to be overly ambitious.

Since Guava Island is an Amazon Prime exclusive, it can only be found to stream on Amazon Prime. Though this makes it inaccessible, it helps Amazon Prime if there are any Rihanna or Donald Glover fans that are itching for another project from them.

6. Funny Face

IMDBRotten TomatoesWhere to Watch

Featuring a highly-regarded actress from the mid-1900s, Funny Face is a story about how a shy book clerk from Greenwich Village, Bo Stockton, becomes a model doing photoshoots in Paris. Though she is reluctant to do so, Bo (played by Audrey Hepburn) does end up finding things that she loves including Fred Astaire’s Dick Avery who is the photographer that discovered her.

A charming story with actors and music that is lightning in the model makes this a movie that you should definitely watch once you have the chance. Audrey Hepburn is a legend in her own right, and if you haven’t seen many of her films, this isn’t a terrible place to start. However, it definitely isn’t as critically acclaimed like My Fair Lady and Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

Audrey Hepburn is a defining role in Hollywood’s growth as more females are able to break into the scene. She, along with actresses like Judy Garland and Doris Day, showed that women could lead just as much as men could.

Funny Face might not seem as accessible as West Side story since it is only available on Amazon Prime, CBS All Access, and Pluto TV, but that last one actually makes it more accessible than most films on this list. If you don’t know Pluto TV is, you might be confused as to why that is. However, if you hop on over to Pluto TV, you’ll see that it is free – making this movie accessible to anyone!

7. A Star is Born

IMDBRotten TomatoesWhere to Watch
7.386Amazon Prime

A Star is Born follows Janet Gaynor’s Esther as she tries making it as an actress. When Fredric March’s Norman discovers her, he shoots her to stardom as he is a well-established actor already. As her star shines, his fades under a cloud of alcoholism, and Esther is forced to decide between her career and caring for her now-husband.

No doubt was there a star born when this movie was made. You are probably very familiar with the title of this film, and if you are not, just hop on over to the winners and nominations of the 2019 awards season. Obviously, this film wasn’t released in 2019, but since this one was released, there have been two other remakes starring Barbra Streisand/Kris Kristofferson and Lady Gaga/Bradley Cooper respectively.

All three movies feature amazing songs that will be remembered for years, but the latest film most certainly has the most mainstream soundtrack such as Shallow, I’ll Never Love Again, and Look What I Found. This has a large part to do with its success with awards and Lady Gaga’s loyal fanbase.

Again, the original A Star is Born is extremely accessible due to it being on a free service. In addition to being on many paid streaming services like Amazon Prime, Mubi, and Pureflix, it is also on Tubi and the Roku Channel which both provide the movie for free!

8. Hello Again

IMDBRotten TomatoesWhere to Watch
5.149Amazon Prime

Hello Again tells many stories of falling in and out of love throughout time in which there are no limitations as to what can be told or shown. As a result, this is definitely not for anyone looking for more conservative storytelling. It is in no way an innocent story, but for some, it is a good one.

My word choice in the previous sentence and that Rotten Tomatoes rating tells you that the audience for this film is small. Despite having stars from hit TV shows such as Jenna Ushkowitz from Glee and Tyler Blackburn from Pretty Little Liars, it hasn’t reached a large audience.

Ranging from LGBTQ+ storylines and more promiscuous scenes, this story is different from most on this list, but it does tell stories that aren’t told often in Hollywood. If you are looking for more stories like that, Hello Again isn’t a bad place to start. It has stellar songs such as In Some Other Life and The Greatest of Adventures/Tom that will have you singing along.

Hello Again is accessible through Amazon Prime and Hoopla which is a library-based service. However, it is also on Tubi which provides the movie for free!

9. De-Lovely

IMDBRotten TomatoesWhere to Watch
6.648Amazon Prime

De-Lovely is a biopic that tells the life of Cole Porter through his amazing repertoire of songs that have mesmerized many for decades. De-Lovely stars Kevin Kline as the real-life musician Cole Porter while Ashley Judd plays the role of his wife Linda Porter. In the film, Porter recollects on his life with his wife while also recalling his many homosexual encounters and depression of his later years.

De-Lovely, though only okay, features some of the best songs ever featured in a musical. In fact, the songs saved this film for so many that didn’t particularly love anything else. For example, a fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes specifically stated that Cole Porter’s music kept this otherwise sinking movie afloat.

Since Porter’s music already had a cult following, this film was destined to have a decent amount of people praise it for the soundtrack. There’s not much you can do to mess up his music. Therefore, this movie is worth a watch for the music alone as it will expose you to some of his best music.

In addition to being on Amazon Prime, De-Lovely is on several other services. It is available on the well-known streaming service, Hulu, but it is also available through EPIX and anywhere that you watch EPIX like cable and Roku.

10. The Doors

IMDBRotten TomatoesWhere to Watch
7.276Amazon Prime

The Doors is another biopic that shows off Jim Morrison, the lead singer of The Doors, as he and his bandmates rise to fame. Much like his counterparts, Morrison ditches the fame and fortune for the darker side of Hollywood. Addiction takes over Morrison’s life in the form of drugs, alcohol, and love which gets him into more trouble.

Though Val Kilmer gives an outstanding performance as one of the most extraordinary figures in the music industry, there are certainly some flaws elsewhere with the movies. It’s not the best musical ever, but on Amazon Prime, this movie deserves a spot on this list. However, this film would be lower if there was more of a selection on Amazon Prime.

This movie isn’t bad though, and there is a lot to love about the cast which features actors like Meg Ryan and the aforementioned Val Kilmer. The issue lies within the story being told as Oliver Stone, the director, just couldn’t display the eventful life that Jim Morrison lived the way it should’ve been told.

If you are one who enjoys musical biopics like Rocketman and Bohemian Rhapsody, but you aren’t invested in Jim Morrison’s life, you will probably enjoy this film enough. However, knowing his story will lead you to poke holes in how his life was told, and you’ll probably wish that it had different people behind the screen.

With the recent biopics showing the eventful lives of Freddie Mercury and Elton John, Stone could have accurately shown everything that Morrison’s life entailed. Though that didn’t happen, it’s a fun enough joyride with Kilmer leading the pack.

The Doors is another film that is quite accessible to most people. In addition to being available on Amazon Prime, you can also find it on CBS All Access, Hoopla, and Pluto TV which is free. Even though you are able to watch it for free, if you’re invested in this film, you may want to purchase it for $5.99 which is a very good price. It is available for that price on several services like Redbox On-Demand, VUDU, and Google Play.

Whatever delightful musical you sit down to tonight, we hope it fills your heart with joy and lungs with songs you’ll be singing the rest of the week.
