Sundance Now Review
I often find myself struggling with independent cinema streaming services as they ca be very hit or miss, with dozens of cheap films from studios I have never heard of and never wish to hear from again. I am not saying all Indy film services are bad but just that there is a lot of painful content and it can often take a little digging to find those Gems, which all Indy services do most definitely have. Whilst I believe Sundance Now is not exempt from this rule it does offer some of the greatest Indy films to ever grace our screens.
Sundance is obviously a well known name especially among real film fans, for years the organisation has been responsible for helping many great directors and film makers to be discovered among an ocean of Hollywood bullies and Disney Dynasties, it was only a matter of time until they had their own streaming services, and with its current content and its growing resources may only be a matter of time until it rivals Netflix.
Sundance Now is one of the only services among the likes of Netflix and Amazon that has the resources to create its own exclusive series, this is a game changer for any streaming service and sets off a real warning shot across all major competitors. Sundance has a great selection of exclusive series, however they may not be series you know but rather more independent creations. I recommend you watch one of these in your free trial as they can be every bit as good as a big budget Netflix studio TV show. Often with much better Independent writers that have not yet been corrupted by the commercial need of having to please everyone, often ruining films and shows with necessary romance, explosions and stupid plots.
I think at this point it is clear I am a fan of Sundance Now, however I am a film buff so happy to admit I am bias. It certainly would not appeal to my child nieces and nephews or any family unit. Nor would it appeal to my neanderthal, beer drinking Friday night boozing buddies, who genuinely enjoyed the 2010 Clash of the Titans disaster???, if this sounds like you then that’s fine, this is not for you, each to their own is what I always say.
Beyond the content Sundance is available on iOS, Android, Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV ,Roku and Xbox one in addition to any standard desktop browser, or it is available through amazon channels. Features may vary from device to device but ultimately this is trivial and works fine. One small downside is its lack of (or complete absence) of HD and 4k content, this definitely needs to change, whilst this is fine for series or watching on tablets or phones if your in the lounge watching through your 4k 50 inch screen then it is a little disappointing. At $6.99 a month or $59.99 per year it is fairly priced in comparison with many other services.
