Is Surfshark VPN Free?
No, there is no free option for Surfshark.
Is Surfshark VPN Legal?
Yes, most VPNs you come across are completely legal. The reason for this is they serve many legitimate purposes. As for Netflix and accessing other content that may not be copyrighted, it is not A VPNs responsibility to block themselves. It is like saying a company making kitchen knives is responsible for everyone who cuts themselves, it is a tool for you to use correctly.
How does Surfshark work?
Surfshark works by routing your Internet connection through a Virtual Private Network in a number of chosen locations (as listed above). The gag-order and the fact they are in the British Virgin Islands means your information is private.
What devices is Surfshark VPN app available
SurfShark has a specific app for the following…
- Windows
- Android
- iOS
- macOS
- Linux
- Android TV
It also has plugin apps for the following browsers…
- Chrome
- Firefox
How to Watch Netflix on Surfshark VPN?
To access different Netflix libraries is easy.
- Mobile devices – download and install the app and make sure you login to your account. You change the location on the app and then anything you use on your phone will come from that location.
- Desktop Browsers – When using desktop, you will have to access Netflix by either Firefox or Chrome and have the plugin added to the browser. You will see the SurfShark icon in the top banner of your browser. Simply click and select your location.
- Windows, mac or Linux – download and install the full software to your PC/Mac and run the install process. Your computers locations should be located in your chosen VPN for all activities.
- Android TV – download from the Android/Play Store from your device. From here all your browsing/internet access should be via the VPN for that device.
How to set-up a router with Surfshark VPN
All the Apps and plugins are made for user simplicity. If you are a little more tech savy and needing to connect a device to your VPN which is not supported by a SurfShark App then you can connect your Internet router directly.

- Language – Choose the language of your VPN
- Leak protection – meaning the DNS server details can not be revealed for extra security

Surfshark VPN Performance Review
After 2 weeks of testing this VPN I am very happy with my service
- Browsing – Mostly ran smooth, however I noticed on my android phone when I do location on google map it still picks up my real GPS location on google maps
- Netflix - running perfectly, I have not encountered any blocked VPNs as of yet. I would recommend the Japanese location for this as their Netflix has a large selection of popular Anime.
- WordPress – I wanted to test it a bit more so I tried using WordPress and more specifically Cornerstone web block builder. At this point I have ran into some speed issues, however it still performs better than my 4G when using the same applications. Though I do not know why you would want to use a VPN for a WordPress site, it is pointless?
Internet Speed Test…
Control test with no VPN in London on up to 100 Mbps connection – 87.2 Mbps Download, 92.2 Mbps Upload
- USA (New York) – 90 Mbps Download, 57.4 Mbps Upload
- Malaysia – 0.89 Mbps Download, 29.6 Upload (terrible download)
- Brazil – 82.6 Mbps Download, 16.5 Mbps Upload
- Australia – 82.7 Mbps Download, 3.93 Mbps Upload
- India (Mumbai) – 77 Mbps Download, 0 Mbps Upload (no upload possible)
- France – 93.1 Mbps Download, 79.4 Mbps Upload
Surfshark VPN security details
A Primary feature for any VPN must be security. Surfshark employs the following security features...
- Two-Factor Authentication Login – a user choice to make sure no one else can login to your VPN account.
- DNS leak protection – No DNS leaking meaning no detection of IP address being visible.
- Kill switch – if VPN goes down you have a choice of reverting to your own internet or cutting your internet connection to ensure you always remain hidden.
- Double VPN – Surfshark runs your connection through 2 VPNs for added protection and privacy.
- Clean Web feature – protecting you by blocking ads, malware and trackers
- Blind Search - online search tool that never collects your history
- Hack Lock - a data leak alert system that lets users know when their email appears online.
- Secure Encryption – they encrypt all your data that goes through their VPN, so if the worst happens and information is leaked then it is encrypted so it cannot be effectively read.
- Located in British Virgin Islands – meaning they are outside the jurisdiction of the 5/9/14 Eyes Alliance. Basically they will not co-operate with authorities or law enforcement.
Surfshark VPN support
Like many supports they will do everything they can to direct you towards their FAQs. It is rare that I find a support that does not get annoyed when they feel as if my questions is already in the support pages under some obscure small text FAQ section. There is little difference here.
The support has the following formats...
- A Q&A section for common questions
- A section to submit requests
- Online Chat – though it is not easy to find, I found it here https://support.surfshark.com/hc/en-us/articles/360003103653-What-is-your-refund-policy-
- Support email support@surfshark.com

Surfshark VPN Overview
I can only conclude that Surfshark is a very effective service for both browsing security and accessing expanded libraries on services such as Netflix. Some services still detect the VPN, for example Amazon Prime seems to be aware of the VPN when tryng to watch something, and will block you.
Whilst some more obscure locations were slow for upload and download speeds the main locations that most people try to access were very fast, New York was faster than my own direct internet connection.
One drawback was that it does save advert cookies automatically unless you turn the Web Cleaner option on manually, this is a worry as most people will not realise you must turn it on to remain hidden to targeted ads.
If you are looking to expand your Netflix library then this is worth a shot. I personally use it for browsing and researching my competitors in SEO across different locations. It also allows me to access services and free trials that are not available where I am, so in terms of my business use is on point and more than adequate.
